The Geffen Playhouse and the mobile diner, the Buttermilk Truck, are partnering to bring new meaning to the phrase “play with your food.”
In celebration of Tracy Letts’ new play Superior Donuts opening at the Playhouse, and in preparation for National Donut Day on June 3, the beloved breakfast truck will be going incognito. From May 31 to June 3, The Buttermilk Truck will be frying and glazing under the guise of the Superior Donuts Truck, with Buttermilk’s signature cake donuts being re-dubbed “Superior Donuts.” Patrons of the Superior Donuts Truck will be treated to a play with their food in the form of specially priced tickets to the Geffen’s current donut-themed production, which begins in previews on May 31 and runs through July 10.
To further sweeten the situation, the Superior Donuts Truck (aka the Buttermilk Truck) will be parked in Westwood in front of the Geffen Playhouse on National Donut Day, Friday, June 3 from 11:30 am to 2 pm. But there’s a twist (and not just a cinnamon one) — the cast of Superior Donuts will serve the finger-licking-sugar-coated-vanilla-glazed donuts to every hungry customer who purchases one. The cast includes Office Space’s Gary Cole and Twilight’s Edi Gathegi with Brian Abraham, Ron Bottitta, Paul Dillon, Mary Beth Fisher, Damon Gupton, Kathryn Joosten and Matt McTighe.
Superior Donuts, written by Tracy Letts and directed by Geffen Playhouse artistic director Randall Arney, is the humorous tale of an unlikely friendship set in a sweets shop in one of Chicago’s most diverse neighborhoods. Arthur Przybyszewski’s Superior Donuts has been a community hub for decades, and both the neglected storefront and its rundown owner are evidence to that. But when Franco, a young fast-talking dreamer, bounds into the shop, the writing is on the wall that things are going to change – maybe even for the better.
