The goal of Center Theatre Group’s Richard E. Sherwood Programs is to cultivate emerging artists of promise and young arts professionals, and invite them to engage in a professional relationship with Center Theatre Group. The Sherwood Award is a $10,000 fund designed to nurture early career theatre artists living in Los Angeles.
Originally created in 1996 as an annual fund to support Los Angeles-based innovative and adventurous theatre artists, the SherwoodAward was established in memory of Richard E. Sherwood. Sherwood was a patron of the arts with a special appreciation for the energy and talent of emerging artists who are vanguards in theatre. He was president of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and president and then chairman of Center Theatre Group’s Board of Directors from 1980 until his death in 1993. The award is endowed by the Sherwood family and honors Sherwood’s passionate commitment to theatre.
Costume designer Ann Closs-Farley selected as the recipient of the 2010 Sherwood Award
“Ann is a wildly creative and hugely talented designer,” said Leslie Johnson, CTG’s Director of Education and Community Partnerships. “We are so pleased to give her not only a bridge to this next stage of her career, but also an opportunity to spearhead her own project. She has proven herself within our community time and time again, and we are thrilled to work with her through the Sherwood partnership.”
As a designer, Ann passionately espouses ideas of using recyclable and thrift store materials in her work, and has pioneered agreements between theatres to share costumes. She has a keen interest in current technologies and looks to finds ways to incorporate the innovations used in filmmaking into the world of theatre. She is currently working on The Pee Wee Herman Show at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on Broadway and will be returning to teach costume design for The Heart Project in conjunction with The L.A. Opera at Pueblo High School this fall.
