USC Hosts National Summit for
Arts Journalism

News by Janet Thielke  |  July 16, 2009

Arts journalism is undergoing radical changes as the culture is being transformed.  (Like say, LA Stage Magazine going entirely online in this lovely new lastageblog.com). So what’s next?  According to the National Arts Journalism Program, experimentation is the order of the day.  Every week they are presented with new projects aimed at reinventing arts coverage. On Friday, October 2 at the USC Annenberg School for Communication, the program is holding a Summit to showcase the best of these new projects.  The event will be held in front of a live audience of cultural leaders, journalists, media entrepreneurs and funders, and streamed on the web.  Five of the projects for the Summit will be chosen from those submitted on this website before midnight, Monday, August 17.  A representative from each of the five projects will be brought to Los Angeles to make a 7-10-minute presentation at the Summit.  Each of the five projects will get $2,000 plus travel expenses and coaching on their presentation.  In the two weeks following the event, members of the National Arts Journalism Program and alumni of the National Endowment for the Arts’ Arts Journalism Institutes will vote on their favorite projects.  Prizes of $7,500 for first, $5,000 for second and $2,500 for third will be awarded.  To see more information about what they’re looking for and guidelines for submission, please visit the FAQ page.  To submit a project, go here. (Editor’s note: Sasha Anawalt of USC and one of the hosts for this event serves on the LASA Board)
